Pomona Pow Wow

20th BIG TIME GATHERING

(MONDAY, MAY 07, 2012)

POMONA - The smells of burning sage and the sounds of tribal drums filled the atmosphere Saturday as Tony Cerda Park played host to the 20th annual Costanoan Rumsen Carmel Tribe's "Big Time" Gathering Pow Wow.

The tribe originally was based in the Bay Area, tribal Chairman Tony Cerda said. The tribe began an exodus to Southern California in 1863 and arrived in 1864.

Many tribe members were being killed in the Bay Area, so the move was one of self-preservation, Cerda said.

However, the tribe still has a large ceremonial presence in Northern California, he said.

Several tribes were represented at this year's event, he said.

Members of the Northern Traditional tribes such as the Sioux and Shoshone, West Coast tribes such as Costanoan, Eastern tribes such as Mohawks and Onondaga and every nation in between had representatives in the park during the three-day affair.

"Some of the kids dancing weren't even born" (when the event first started), Cerda said. "Now they're 18, 19 and in college."

This year is the third time the powwow has been held at the park, he said.

For Aztec dancer Xoco Villegas of Riverside, part of the Xochotl Group, it was his first powwow as an active participant in the dance aspect.

The powwow finishes its three-day run today. For more information on the event or the tribe, visit costanoanrumsen.org.
